No. 1 Pizzeria in Naples Eat + Drink / Travel

The city of Naples in Italy is synonymous with pizza. It is the capital of the Campania region and is known to have the best pizza in the world.

Who invented pizza?

Pizza is believed to have originated in Naples. As an independent kingdom in the 1700s, Naples was notorious for mobs of lazzaroni, the poorest of the lower class. These Neapolitans were in need of a quick meal that was inexpensive. Pizza, a flatbread with various toppings, was the answer! It was sold by street vendors and informal restaurants.

In 1889, King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy visited Naples after the unification of Italy. The pair were apparently bored with their usual meal and asked for pizzas with different toppings from Pizzeria Brandi. The flavour that the Queen enjoyed the most was a flatbread topped with soft white cheese, red tomatoes and green basil. Some say that the chef of Pizzeria Brandi created the pizza in honour of Queen Margherita and the unification of Italy in 1861 hence the colors of the Italian flag were incorporated to the pizza. From that day forward, the pizza with the same toppings has been called Margherita pizza.

Open seven days. Credit cards not accepted.

Founded by Salvatore Condurro in 1870 and still being run by the Condurro family today. The menu is short and sweet, there are only 2 choices: pizza margherita (cheese, tomato, basil) or marinara (tomato, oregano and garlic).

This is where the locals eat and order pizza for takeout. There will be a queue but the pizza is worth the wait! One order is usually good for one person, try the margherita with extra mozzarella! The crust is soft, tomatoes are sweet, cheese is fresh and the whole pizza is creamy!
