If there’s one thing that I’ve always appreciated about L’Oréal, it’s their thoughtful and very tasteful representation of their brand – from their product packaging, to the actual folks working there, to the artful way they present their new products to the press – they never fail to make you stand up and take notice of their brand.

Take for example their Color Riche Collection Star Velvet Pinks line. Imagine how delighted I was to receive such a beautiful package at my home on a Monday morning! It was truly a great way to start off a work week, and thanks to the team at L’Oréal Philippines, it absolutely was!

L'Oréal just knows the way to a woman's heart. By far the loveliest package to arrive at my doorstep!

Packaging and presentation aside, this line does come with its fair share of high points (and a few lows). If you’re someone who can accept the bad along with the good, then I see no reason why you shouldn’t purchase these 400-peso (a steal, IMHO) lippies from L’Oréal.

First things first, my 3 absolute faves from this line are: Primrose/”Blake (Lively)”, which gives users a youthful, radiant finish thanks to its orange-pink tones; Jasmine/”Naomi (Campbell)”, which just adds a touch of elegance to any makeup look with its tea pink hues; and Nymphea/”Eva (Mendes)”, which I feel is the perfect, everyday shade for fair skinned Filipinas with its peachy, warm pink tones (I would know, I used this shade relentlessly for 2 straight weeks). The first two shades, Primrose and Jasmine, along with Camelia/”Doutzen (Kroes)” with its bright pink pop of color, are supposedly perfect for Filipinas with pale/fair complexion. Personally, I feel that it doesn’t really matter what complexion you have as long as you’re bold, fun and carefree enough to make your own makeup rules! Be a makeup rebel, as they say! If you’re confident enough to make it work, then there’s always a 99% chance that you’ll most probably pull it off with the right attitude. Remember, you wear the makeup, the makeup doesn’t wear you!

My top 3! (L-R): Primrose/Blake, Jasmine/Naomi & Nymphea/Eva.

That being said, I would like to make clear that I still very much appreciate how L’Oréal really took the time to carefully consider the perfect colors to suit every Filipina skin tone. Thoughtfulness goes a long way in my book, and so far, L’Oréal has this in spades. For those ladies that prefer to stick to their “home colors”, or colors that they’re usually comfortable with, L’Oréal recommends Iris/”Aishwarya (Rai)” and Fucshia/”Liya (Kebede)” for medium skin tones; and Nymphea/”Eva (Mendes)” or Rose Lotus/”J.Lo (Jennifer Lopez)” for morenas.

Pigment-wise, I was a bit surprised to see that the initial application was a bit sheer. It became pretty clear after that, that this would be one of those products that would require a little more hard work to use (by applying a layer or 2 more), if you want to get the most out of its color.  So if you’re the type that just slaps on lipstick without properly prepping your lips (exfoliate, hydrate and line), then I can guarantee that this lipstick will wear off within the first 2 hours of wear – 1 hour if you’re eating an oily breakfast or lunch. Do keep in mind though that this is something that I feel rings true not just with L’Oréal lipsticks, but ALL lipsticks – unless you’re a believer in THOSE kinds of lipsticks. You know what I’m talking about (raises an eyebrow) – the ones that are almost too painful to remove and are definitely NOT good for your lips in the long run (lip wrinkles are a legit thing, you know).

Basically, what I’m trying to get at is this: to really get the most out of these lippies, I highly suggest getting into the practice of exfoliating and hydrating your lips before going to bed, and then priming your lips with some sort of balm and a lip liner before putting the actual lipstick on. It may sound tedious, but taking a few extra minutes to perform these steps will ensure a smooth/er application and that the product stays on for as long as possible. Plus, you can find so many great, affordable lip exfoliators, balms and lipliners from the drugstore that it shouldn’t be that much of a problem on your wallet! In fact, you’ll find that after making this a habit that the color of your lippie becomes even more vibrant, and noticeably longer lasting.

With regards to the application of this product, I’d have to say that this is one of the smoothest applications I’ve ever experienced, as the lipstick just glides on like silk on your lips. More than that, it sits very comfortably on the lips despite having a velvet matte finish, as the product doesn’t cling too much to your lip lines and dry patches (A+ there!).

However, if you’re still having reservations about the “pink-ness” (for lack of a better term) of this lipstick range from L’oreal (I know how some girls just avoid this color altogether), then Bea Dela Torre from L’Oréal Philippines has a few reassuring words for you: “Most Filipinas shy away from Pink lipsticks because they think the color looks unnatural on them, or that it’s hard to pull off because it only suits a few. With our newest pink collection, Filipinas can finally have a selection of wearable velvety matte pink lipstick shades that brings a light and fresh effect to anyone’s look. Each shade is custom-made to fit every Filipina skin tone to complement the natural pink shade of their lips”.
